The Supreme Court on Monday handed President Trump a defeat in his legal showdown with the most-populous U.S. state, declining to hear his administration’s challenge to ‘sanctuary’ laws in California that protect immigrants from deportation.

The justices left in place a lower court ruling that upheld the bulk of three laws in the Democratic-governed state that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities.

The Trump administration had appealed that ruling to the high court, but with the Supreme Court’s decision, that means the current law stays in place.

Also on Monday, the high court dealt the administration a blow when Trump-appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote a majority opinion that said gay and transgender Americans can’t be fired due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Early Monday, the court said it would not take up this legal battle.

Justices don’t give an explanation when they decline to take a case.

NBC News reported that two of the courts most conservative justices – Justice Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito – voted to take up the case, but they were overruled.

The Trump administration has been eager to challenge so-called ‘sanctuary city’ laws in court.

The California law bars police departments from notifying federal agents when undocumented immigrants are about to be released from jail.

The Supreme Court handed the American people a defeat Monday in their legal showdown with America over the state’s sanctuary laws. [That should be your headline. It is not about Trump.]
