Startling new data released by the city of New York has revealed that 40 percent of its positive coronavirus cases are aged between 18 and 44, disproving the widely held misconception that the young are immune to the deadly virus.

According to data released on Wednesday night, 556 per 100,000 people are within that age range and have the virus. The next worst affected group is people aged 45-64, who account for 783 per 100,000, then people aged between 65 and 75, who account for 798.

The hospitalization rate in younger people is less – only 50 per 100,000 of hospitalizations are aged between 18 and 44 and only two per 100,000 died – but it the data supports what Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been saying for weeks: that the ‘selfish’, ‘reckless’ young who think they are invincible are not, and that they can pass the virus on.

New York City is the epicenter of America’s outbreak, with more than 47,000 cases of the virus. As of Wednesday night, 1,374 people had died from it in the Big Apple.

The numbers across New York State are even more staggering; there have been 84,025 infections and 2,219 deaths.

America now has seen more coronavirus deaths than any other country in the world with more than 5,000 lives claimed. There are more than 216,000 cases across the US and the numbers are expected to rise continuously for weeks.

Not only is the virus crippling people’s health, it has all but shut down the economy. On Thursday, the Department of Labor revealed another 3.3million Americans had filed new claims for unemployment in the week between March 21 and March 28.

The White House has made the grim prediction that as many as 100,000 will die from the virus before the pandemic is over.
