Hundreds of people will be dead from coronavirus and the UK will be in lockdown in just two weeks unless the government takes drastic action within “days”, one of Europe’s top disease experts has warned.
Banning all sports and music events and stopping non-essential travel on public transport is the only way to stop the killer Covid-19 bug paralysing Britain like it has Italy, said Sergio Brusin of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
He issued his terrifying warning on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire show this morning where he urged ministers to act quickly before it’s too late.
“If you don’t do anything then thousands of cases will come,” he said.
“The UK is in the same situation Italy was two weeks ago.”
There are now 280 confirmed cases of the deadly virus in the UK.
Sunday saw the biggest rise in 24 hours.
Mr Brusin added: “Italy went from 200 to 1000 in 10 days.
“That’s how this disease is working.”
Asked by Victoria if we should ban all large gatherings, Mr Brusion replied: “That would be a very reasonable thing to do.
“If it doesn’t you will be in the same situation there is in Italy now.”
