Coronavirus vaccine ‘could take up to a year to be ready’ says medical giant boss

Johnson and Johnson’s chief scientific officer Dr Paul Stoffels says that he is “very worried” the Wuhan outbreak could become a global pandemic

Scientists working on a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus infection say they are “confident” they will succeed – but they warn that it could be as long as a year before the product is ready for use.

Dr Paul Stoffels, chief scientific officer for pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson, told CNBC that the company started work on the project a fortnight ago.

He said: “I’m very worried that this could become a global pandemic.

“That’s why we started working on this vaccine two weeks ago, we have to be prepared that this is going to become a global crisis.”
