Forbes, Activist Post and many others have been reporting about Philadelphia’s increasing use of symptom-causing technology installed to keep the kids, young adults, thieves, vandals, and other ne’er-do-wells away from 31 locations at night. One council woman even described it as a “sonic weapon” which seems appropriate considering that health experts overseas have been fighting since 2010 to get this technology banned.

From Forbes:

The Mosquito, invented in the U.K. back in 2005, is described by the product’s Canada-based North American distributor as a “small speaker that produces a high-frequency sound much like the buzzing of the insect—this high frequency can be heard by young people 13 to 25 years old,” and reaches as far as 130 feet, depending on the set volume.

Hearing deteriorates with age, and so older people cannot hear the high (17.5 to 18.5 kilohertz) frequencies emitted by the $5,000 devices, which Philadelphia has been deploying since 2014 and is now in 31 locations to “prevent loitering and vandalism.”

Micahel [sic] Gibson, the CEO of distributor Moving Sound Technologies, told NPR that “the intention was just to move, non-confrontationally, youth from an area where they should not be. And that will prevent vandalism. It’ll prevent graffiti, loitering.”

City officials have deemed the technology to be safe, but it has raised safety concerns overseas.

In 2010, the Council of Europe went further, demanding a ban on the devices, which “inflict acoustic pain on young people and treat them as unwanted birds or pests.”

Philadelphia Councilwoman Helen Gym told NPR that “in a city that is trying to address gun violence and safe spaces for young people, how dare we come up with ideas that are funded by taxpayer dollars that turn young people away from the very places that were created for them?”

Add the 1,824 unsafe 5G small cells to a bunch of speakers producing a “high-frequency sound much like the buzzing of the insect”, and the City of Brotherly Love doesn’t sound so lovable – or livable. It sounds more like the setting for a movie that could be called, Escape from Philadelphia.
