(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) told CNSNews.com on Thursday, “I don’t think there’s any question” that the president has a right to enforce immigration laws, and Cramer decried the “discretionary enforcement” of said laws that “distorts the public view” of the president’s power to do so.

CNSNews.com asked the senator, “Article 2, Section 3 of the Constitution says the president ‘shall take care that the laws are faithfully executed.’ Does the President have a constitutional duty to enforce immigration laws?”

“I don’t think there’s any question about it,” Cramer responded, “and the fact that they’ve been ignored for so many years and maybe even decades and using things like discretionary enforcement only undermines and frankly distorts the public view of that very authority that the president has.

“So when President Trump actually exercises his authority by enforcing the laws as opposed to exercising the authority by ignoring them, some people are – perhaps understandably – confused, but it’s really President Trump that’s living up to the responsibility of the job,” the senator added.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said in written testimony that over 593,000 people were apprehended at points of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border.

She added there were over 100,000 documented cases of “got aways” – people who successfully crossed the border illegally but were not apprehended before they disappeared into border towns.
