All flights were stopped around 9pm last night at Gatwick after reports of a drone sighting near one of the runways.

Planes full of passengers were left stuck on the runway, and passengers were diverted to airports as far away as Bordeaux in France.

It has been confirmed that the drones have been used in a deliberate act to disrupt the airport, just before Christmas.

And now the Army could be called in to deal with the situation.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “There are ongoing discussions with the police about any military capability that could be provided to assist with their operation.”

Gatwick has apologised to travellers, saying it expects operations to return to service around 7pm.

It confirmed: “Our runway is still closed because of drone sightings. Flights are cancelled up to at least 19.00 today, while we constantly review the situation.

“Please do not set out for the airport for your flight without checking with your airline first. We’re sorry for the disruption.”

Police snipers were pictured at the Sussex airport, hunting for the drone.

But it later revealed it could not be shot down, due to passenger safety fears.
