EARTHQUAKES today are rocking around the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, where they have notably been rumbling in Alaska. The latest chain of earthquakes are taking place just two weeks after a huge 7.1 magnitude quake rocked the region.

Earthquake aftershocks in Alaska have set down due north of the city of Anchorage, where a collection of smaller tremors are once again rumbling. Alaska’s traditionally earthquake-prone environment has had little break since the December 30 earthquake, which hit with magnitude 7.1, enough to cause severe shaking. The city of Anchorage was heavily affected, with heavy shaking causing local infrastructure to crack and dislodging highways. While no-one was killed in the potentially dangerous tremors, the area has been under continued pressure from aftershocks.

Today’s activity in Alaska has been more typical of the area, with a high volume of smaller earthquakes taking place within minutes of one another.

The first tremors started at 5.12am GMT this morning, and was a very small presence at 20km deep and with a magnitude of 2.8.

This was followed by another three smaller earthquakes six, five and 18 minutes later, all at similar magnitudes from 2.8 to 3.2 and depths of up to 35km.

Since then, earthquakes have been taking place up until 12pm, with no new stirrings for the mid-afternoon.
