Satellite images taken from Google Earth reportedly show a large group of battle tanks at a military base outside Kamensk-Shakhtinksy in Russia’s Rostov Oblast region.

The base is just 11 miles (18km) away from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine.

According to the Defense Blog, the tanks are T-64 and T-62Ms and are being reinforced with a contingent of military trucks and artillery systems.

The gathering will heighten fears Russia and Ukraine are once again on the brink of war following the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

In the last couple of weeks, tensions have peaked in the region after three Ukrainian navy ships were seized by Russia on the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Dozens of Ukrainian sailors were detained, leading to a stand-off that just two days ago saw Ukrainian military vessels threatening to open fire on any Russian ships that approach them.

Last week, the commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, Viktor Muzhenko indicated a full-scale conflict could be on the horizon.
