Iran unveiled its latest addition to its range of firepower – the Sahand destroyer, which can destroy “any approaching target” within two kilometres. The stealth destroyer is the Iranian regime’s most advanced warship ever added to its naval fleet. The new domestically-built warship is set to intensify an already escalating crisis with the US, after President Donald Trump reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
The Sahand destroyer can sustain journeys of up to five months without resupply missions and is capable of radar evasion.
In a ceremony broadcast on live state television, the Sahand destroyer joined Iran’s regular navy at a base in Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.
The Sahand has a flight deck for helicopters, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and even electronic warfare capabilities.
Hours after the opening ceremony, Iran allegedly test fired a ballistic missile that’s capable of carrying multiple warheads – which violates a UN resolution.
