Haiti earthquake pictures: Horrifying damage after 5.9 magnitude rocks Haiti capital

HAITI has been devastated by a major 5.9 magnitude earthquake which has killed at least 11 people and injured 135 more. The quake struck the north-west Caribbean Island at around 8pm local time on Saturday (1am BST) with several buildings collapsed and homes crushed.

The sheer power of the quake measuring 5.9 on the richter scale covered an area of 7.3 miles ( 11.7 Kilometres) stretching from Port-de-Paix on the northern coast to the town of Gros-Morne further south.

Police chiefs said at least seven people were killed in Port-de-Paix and four people died in and around the town of Gros-Morne.

These shocking pictures reveal the extent of the damaged caused to life in Haiti.

Buildings and cars are severely damaged with debris and rubble masking the streets.

Homes have crumbled due to the magnitude of the quake causing one of the biggest humanitarian crisis’ in the region for years.

The civil protection agency said the disaster created “panic” across the island and at least 135 people were being treated for their injuries.

The agency said: “The shock was felt across all departments of the country, giving rise to panic in several towns.”

Among the areas most effected by the force of the quake were Port-de-Paix, Gros Morne, Chansolme and Turtle Island along with Saint-Michel church in Plaisance.
