Super Typhoon Mangkhut, also known as ‘Ompong’ is expected to smash into the coast in mere hours, bringing with it devastating winds of up to 170mph and destructive storm surges of up to 19 ft according to government authorities.

The terrifying mega-storm is currently 540km east of Baler Aurora Mangkhut on Luzon and barrelling its way towards the islands at an increased speed.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) have warned that the majority of traditionally built houses may be unroofed or completely destroyed and that there would be “considerable damage to structures of light to medium construction.”

PAGSA officials warned: “There may be widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.

In general, moderate to heavy damage may be experienced particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.”

Almost all banana plants may be downed and a large number of trees may be uprooted. Rice and corn crops may suffer heavy losses the authorities warned.

Across the South China Sea, Hong Kong was previously on a collision course from the barrelling storm but will now avoid a direct hit after Mangkhut changed direction slightly, moving west-northwest.

But preparations have been ramped up ahead of the expected torrential rain, squall and storm surge.
