Mexico earthquake: 5.2 quake strikes city – Pacific Ring of Fire on alert

AN 5.2-magnitude earthquake has struck in Mexico 12 miles from the city of Ometepec – with the tremor felt in the country’s capital, Mexico City.

The United States Geological Survey confirmed a 5.2 tremor struck 12km WNW of the city of Ometepec at 6.03pm UTC.

There is currently no tsunami warning in place.

The quake comes hours a series of earthquakes in the Caribbean, including one in Venezuela measuring 7.3 hours earlier today.

Mexican news website Proceso reported that the movement was perceptible in Mexico City and states such as Oaxaca, State of Mexico, Morelos and Puebla.

As well as the tremors in the Caribbean, a 6.2 magnitude tremor was also recorded by the United States Geological Survey further up the North American Pacific coast, 175 miles from Coos Bay, Oregon in the US which was felt in the state capital of Portland.

Both the Mexican quake and the Oregon one lie within the so-called Ring of Fire, which stretches thousands of miles around the Pacific.

Luis Felipe, the country’s National Coordinator of Civil Protection, tweeted that civilian protection protocols were activated after the tremor just after 1pm local time, but stressed that no damage had yet been reported.
