The quake hit 5.6 miles (9km) north-west of Huajuapan de Leon, a city in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, with aftershocks felt in Mexico City.

It had a depth of 34 miles (55 kilometres), according to the US Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage following the quake, which struck at 8:31am local time (2:31pm UK time).

Social media users reported feeling buildings shake, with some saying they had to be evacuated from their homes and workplaces.

Twitter user Shayan Samani wrote: “Just experienced an earthquake in Mexico City on the rooftop of the Marriott.”

Akhil Anumolu added: “Just had a 5.7 earthquake south of Mexico City that we clearly felt. Alarms going off.”

Another user tweeted: “We just experienced an earthquake together in Mexico City’s La Condesa neighborhood.”

The US Geological Survey initially said the earthquake was recorded as 5.9-magnitude but this was later reduced to 5.7.

Seismic activity is common in Mexico because the central American country sits on top of the devastating Ring of Fire region.
