Brexit negotiations will not be impacted by the resignation of David Davis, the European Commission has said, as Theresa May’s leadership is called into severe question in the latest crisis for the Prime Minister.

This comes after Dominic Raab, formerly Housing Minister, was this morning named as Mr Davis’ replacement.

A European Commission spokesman said the resignation would not impact talks, and that it will continue to negotiate with the British Government.

Recently Theresa May’s Europe adviser Olly Robbins has been overseeing Brexit negotiations.

Mr Davis has only attended four hours of talks since the start of the year and there was a three-month gap where he didn’t meet the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels.

The former Brexit Secretary resigned from the Cabinet last night after telling Mrs May he could not sell her policy to Britain following the outcome reached at a meeting at Chequers on Friday.

The Prime Minister is seeking to gain support for her plan and quell a backlash from Brexiteers over her soft Brexit model.

But she now faces a major test in the House of Commons and potentially a fractious meeting with MPs and peers on Monday.

She is expected to tell MPs that the strategy agreed upon at Chequers is the “right Brexit” for Britain.

The Cabinet supported Mrs May’s “third way” model for the future customs arrangement with the EU following Brexit, but the option was heavily criticised by Brexiteers.

There is now growing speculation that the Prime Minister’s plans could spark a leadership by pro-Brexit Conservative MPs.

It is understood that the new Brexit Secretary will be announced at around 9am, while Mr Davis will be interviewed on the BBC’s Today programme at 8:10am.
