The Japan volcano, famous for its feature in James Bond film ‘You Only Live Twice’, has sent a plume of ash some 500feet into the air following an explosion.

Shinmoedake, also known as Kirishimayama, erupted for the first time since April as it spewed a massive ash cloud on the main island of Kyushu.

Located in a mainly rural area 616 miles (985 km) from Tokyo, the volcano has now quietened since the earlier activity.

But access to the peak remains restricted as the volcano is monitored for the threat of further activity.

American channel TBS TV said explosions from the eruption managed to fling rock a total of 1,100 metres.

Japan is one of the most volcanically active countries in the world – with 110 active volcanoes, 47 of which are under constant monitoring.

In January, a member of Japan’s military was struck and killed when rocks from a volcanic eruption rained down on skiers at a central mountain resort.

A total of 63 people were killed in the volcanic eruption of Mount Ontake in September 2014, in the country’s worst death toll for nearly 90 years.

Japan has another major volcanic threat, mount Fuji, which last erupted more than 300 years ago.
