This morning, the US Geological Survey (USGS) performed an overflight to assess the status of the erupting volcano.

And what the flight revealed was that the eruption has caused a total restructure of the volcano’s summit.

The USGS tweeted: “An overflight of Kilauea’s summit today shows the continued dramatic slumping and collapse of the Halema‘uma‘u crater area.”

A GPS station used by the USGS has subsided 197ft (60m) into the crater over the past week.

Earlier this month the USGS released a satellite image of the area showing deformation around the summit, indicating surface movement.

As seen in the image below, what the USGS calls the “subsidence of the caldera” – the sinking of the crater – is evident around the crater area.

The reason for the slumping of the caldera is the drainage of magma from the reservoir within the volcano.

This lava lake is draining into the fissures, which in turn push out through the earth and make their way across the land.
