The Hawaii volcano’s devastating lava flows have so far covered 10 square miles and destroyed more than 600 homes.

Aerial footage from Hawaii Civil Defence shows the sheer extent of the damage caused by the Kilauea volcano.

The shocking video shows lava spew from a fissure and flow for miles along Hawaii’s Big Island.

The smouldering volcanic rock can be seen surrounding dozens of homes which have so far narrowly escaped the lava flow.

As the lava hit the Pacific Ocean it released a hazardous haze. A Hawaii county spokesman said: “Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume.

“Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.

“Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation.

“Be aware that the laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning.”

Hawaii’s representative Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News that the destructive lava flows have caused lots of “uncertainty” as residents wait for the active eruption and lava flows to stop.

Drawing comparisons to the Guatemala volcano, where at least 110 people have died after the Fuego volcano erupted last Sunday, Ms Gabbard said there is a danger that the situation in Hawaii could escalate.

She said: “It’s a testament to the community there is Puna, to our local civil defence, our national guard, the first responders who have been on the ground and people really tracking this very closely.
