Huge tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on the EU, Canada and Mexico have come into force today.
A hefty 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminium have been imposed by the US, but the move has received widespread criticism from the UK and other countries.
Britain’s International Trade Secretary Liam Fox labelled the move ‘patently absurd’ and confirmed the UK ‘absolutely does not rule out counter measures’.
French President Emmanuel Macron told Trump the move was ‘illegal’ – a message echoed by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel – and said the EU would respond in a ‘firm and proportionate manner’.
Trump justified the tariffs by claiming steel and aluminium producers are vital to national security and that US wanted to be ‘fair’ by introducing the measures.
