Chris Parry, a former Royal Navy Rear Admiral, has warned about the threat of hostile nations using nuclear weapons against conventional forces on the battlefield.

Speaking at the RUSI Annual Missile Conference in London on Wednesday, Mr Parry said the likes of Russia and China has nuclear tips on a range of weapons, including missiles, shells, torpedoes and bombs.

Using nuclear weapons on the battlefield is “creeping back in the framework”, he told an audience of policy makers and academics.

To illustrate his point, Mr Parry highlighted the example of North Korea leader Kim Jong-un threatening to explode a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean in September last year.

He said: “What this chap [Kim Jong-un] has said is ‘they’re war fighting weapons’.

‘I’m prepared to use them as war fighting weapons’. He said, ‘I’m going to explode one of these over the sea’.

“And we all say, that’s okay, a few fried fish, as long as the ships and aircraft are out of the way. Is that a big deal?

“Well it is when you say I’m going to explode it over the sea and my next move is to put it on top of an American carrier battle group.”

Mr Parry, former commander of HMS Gloucester, called on the UK government to “game” the shift in approach towards tactical nuclear weapons in an increasingly hostile world.
