Russia warns missile stand-off with West is ‘worse than Cold War’
THE missile stand-off between Russia and the West is less “predictable and safer” now than at the height of the Cold War, a Kremlin official has declared today.

The USA is “surrounding” Russia’s borders with advanced missile defence systems that threaten to disrupt global security, according to Maxim Sizov, First Secretary of the Russian Embassy to the UK.
Sizov accused the US military of “shattering the international strategic balance” under successive administrations by building a network of missile systems in allied counties across Europe.
The aim of the US military is to “approach our borders” to nullify the threat of Russia’s missile capabilities, he suggested at the RUSI Missile Defence Conference 2018 in London.
Commenting on the US military’s Ballistic Missile Defence Review (BMDR), Mr Sizov questioned the justification for deploying systems that can shoot down hypersonic weapons that can travel at speeds of 3,500 mph.
He said: “We see that the US global defence missile system is surrounding our borders.
“For example, if you say this system is created to suppress threats form North Korea and Iran.
“But we know this system is capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles.
“Only a couple of countries possess such possibilities.
“As far as we understand North Korea and Iran are very far from creating such systems.”
Im comments echoing Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov Mr Sizov said America’s approach to missile defence has created a situation more dangerous than the Cold War.
He said: “Our main idea is, look what great achievements there were in the 70s and 80s.
“The world was more predictable and safer.
“But now, we can’t say that we’re in a safer world than 20 years ago.”
“Unfortunately we need to establish dialogue to address issues of mutual concern.”
Russia, on the other hand, adopts a defensive approach to military doctrine and missile posture, Mr Sizov said.
