At least 15 people have been injured, and three are in critical condition, after two suspects detonated a bomb in a restaurant near Toronto, Canada, police said.

The explosion took place just after 10.30pm local time at an Indian restaurant in Mississauga, some 20 miles from Toronto, Ontario.

Authorities said ‘two hooded suspects’ walked into the Bombay Bhel restaurant and detonated the improvised explosion device before fleeing the scene.

Local police say the two men entered the restaurant and set down what appeared to be a paint can or pail, which exploded after they fled, Sergeant Matt Bertram told the New York Times. The bomb was filled with ‘projectable objects,’ he said.

‘We have no indication to call it a hate crime or any kind of terrorism act,’ Sgt. Bertram added.

Eyewitnesses describe chaos with injured guests and panicked families fleeing the restaurant, where guests had been holding two separate family parties.

Rafael Conceicao, a student from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was near the restaurant when the explosion occurred.

‘Glass was broken in the street … Everything was destroyed. Lots of blood in the floor. Many people were screaming. They were trying to run out from the restaurant,’ he said.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said she was thankful there were no fatalities.

‘I would call it a very heinous, reprehensible act committed by cowards who came into a restaurant where people are vulnerable, celebrating with their families and where children are present,’ she said.

‘This is certainly not anything you would expect to happen in Mississauga, not my Mississauga. This is not the Mississauga I know.’

Fifteen people were taken to hospital, three of them with critical injuries, the Peel Regional Paramedic Service said in a Tweet.

‘Two parties fled the scene immediately after the incident,’ the tweet added.

Police posted a CCTV image on Twitter appealing to the public for help in identifying the two men.

The photo shows two people with dark zip-up hoodies walking into an establishment with one of them appearing to be carrying an object.

The first suspect is said to be a male about 5’10 to six feet tall with a stocky build. Police said he appears to be in his mid-20s with light skin and was wearing dark blue jeans, a dark zip-up hoodie pulled over his head, a baseball hat and a black cloth covering his face.
