HAWAII Volcanoes National Park has decided to shut down on Friday because an explosion at Mount Kilauea could be imminent.

Fears have grown that there could be further volcanic activity in the region after last week saw 1,700 people evacuated and more than two dozen properties evacuated.

The National Park Service announced on Wednesday it plans to close on Friday – claiming that a “steam-induced explosion” at the summit could cause further damage.

Molten lava and toxic steam have emerged in the area around Mount Kilauea.

It is not yet clear just how long experts anticipate volcanic activity in the region to persist for.

The US Geological Survey did, however, confirm that the risk of more explosions rises if lava drops below the groundwater level beneath the summit’s basin.

Water could cause steam-driven explosions – and 15 fissures have already split the ground open.

Earlier in the day, Hawaii Governor David Ige said that a geothermal energy plant near a lava outbreak in Hawaii has begun to accelerate the removal of its flammable gas.

Mr Ige said a volcanic vent would be “very hazardous” if it opened under the storage facility.
