Leading scientists from the US Government have warned tourists on Hawaii’s Big Island that a shock escalation in the strength of earthquakes could devastate the island.

A number of strong earthquakes hit the Big Island a day after the eruption of the Kilauea volcano.

One of the tremors was a 6.9 magnitude quake, south-east of the volcano – the most powerful to hit the US state since 1975.

Speaking to CBS, Michael Poland, from the US Geological Survey (USGS), said that these earthquakes will continue to wreak havoc and could just be “part of the opening round”.

Dr Poland said that “earthquakes are the thing we need to be worried about right now”.

The US Government scientist told the US broadcaster: “The speed of earthquakes in the area in the last week have been related to the motion of magma underneath the ground, as it broke rock to get to the site where it is currently erupting.

“Over the last hour, we have seen a significant increase in strong earthquakes, magnitude of four, and five, and more.

“That suggests the intrusion of magma has pushed on the flank of the island and even caused it to move out a little bit.”

Asked about the chances of a bigger volcanic eruption or destructive earthquakes in the near-future, Dr Poland said: “It’s possible that this is just the opening round.
