Activity on Kilauea volcano has soared over the last two days, with 250 earthquakes striking when the crater floor collapsed.

Hawaii’s Civil Defense team have told residents in the Big Island to get their emergency plans in place in case the volcano blows.

Terrified locals in the Puna area, about 30 miles from the volcano’s peak, spotted the cracks which emerged as a result of magma flowing beneath a main road.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) shared the image, which was taken in the Leilani Estates.

Explaining why cracks had emerged, the USGS said: “Puna residents reported to HVO geologists the recent appearance of ground cracks on a couple of roads in and around Leilani Estates.

“No steaming or heat were observed to originate from the cracks, and the cracks are currently still small (no more than several inches across).

“These cracks result from deformation of the ground surface due to the underlying intrusion of magma.

“Earthquake activity remains elevated in this area due to the ongoing intrusion.”

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency issued an alert saying areas in the south of the ‘Big Island’ were most at risk.
