The 1,298m Io Yama volcano on the southernmost main island of Kyushu exploded today.
A warning level for the area has now been raised from “2” to “3” on Japan’s 5-level scale.
The authorities have banned access to the rock’s peak.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is also warning that volcanic rocks could be hurled as far as 2 km (1.2 miles).
There are no reports of any injuries or damage.
The eruption comes just hours after an earthquake struck Indonesia – which, along with Japan, sits on the Ring of Fire.
This is a horseshoe-shaped belt running around the Pacific Ocean which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Iran was also struck by a tremor this morning which hit close to a power station.
