Troops supportng Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are emptying main airports and military air bases within control of the regime, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Meanwhile, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon, an aircraft designed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, has been tracked flying towards Syria’s western coast.

US President Trump warned Russia on Wednesday of imminent military action in Syria over a suspected poison gas attack ordered by Assad, who he called an “animal”.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’,” he wrote in a bellicose tweet on Wednesday.

His comments came after a Russian ambassador threatened to shoot down any missiles fired on pro-Assad foreces or bases.

The P-8A, which was travelling souteastwards towards Syria, could be monitoring pro-Assad and Russian military positions ahead of an airstrike.

On Monday Trump warned “animal Assad” and Vladimir Putin that there would be a “big price to pay” for the alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held town city of Douma.

At least 43 people were killed and more than 500 needed treatment over the suspected nevere agent gas attack on the rebel enclave in Eastern Ghouta.

All victims, many of whom were civillians, had “symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals”, according to The World Health Organisation.

Yet, despite the mounting evidence, Putin’s spokesman claims the chemical attack was “invented” to justify military intervention by western nations.

Similarly, Syrian foreign ministry has accused the US of using “fabrications and lies” as an excuse to hit its territory.
