As well as falling public support, Angela Merkel is also facing a revolution within her own party from critics who believe she has abandoned the conservative “father, mother, children” heart of Germany.

Mrs Merkel’s coalition ally Horst Seehofer is also plummeting in opinion polls as Germany loses patience with the CSU/CDU union.

According to a new poll of more than 1,000 people, just over half of all Germans support Mrs Merkel as Chancellor.

The DeutschlandTrend survey revealed only 57 percent of Germans think Mrs Merkel is a good choice – a staggering loss of 18 points since her 2014 heyday.

The CDU chairwoman’s CSU counterpart Mr Seehofer has also suffered a loss of support as Germany turns its back on the establishment.

Only 39 percent of those polled consider Mr Seehofer to be a good choice as Federal Minister of the Interior. A slight majority of 51 percent said he was not a good choice.

Other ministers also suffered low approval ratings in the polls, with Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen receiving 40 per cent support, Health Minister Jens Spahn 26 percent and Employment Minister Hubertus Heil just 25 percent.

It comes as conservative party supporters become increasingly disillusioned with the centrists in the party who no longer focus on “father, mother, children”, a report has claimed.
