A major construction project is currently taking place at North Korea’s General Satellite Control centre in Pyongyang, indicating preparations for a major military event.

Recent satellite images show two large buildings appear to be rising next to the centre above what is believed to be an “underground facility”.

Dozens of workers are pictured working at the construction site, NK Pro has revealed.

State media claim they are used for tracking the “real-time display of satellite launch” – suggesting they might be used to further develop North Korea’s controversial space exploration program.

Curtis Melvin, a North Korea researcher at the US Korea Institute in Washington DC, told the site that he “can’t say for certain what they are for”.

He said: “An extension of the General Satellite Control Centre seems reasonable.

“If it is part of the centre then it seems to represent a major expansion ahead of the promised launch of more satellites and would indicate North Korea is serious about its space programme.’

North Korea has not launched a satellite since February 2016 but plans to conduct at least two more satellite launches this year, representatives of the Center’s National Aerospace Development Administration said.

Pyongyang has previously made bold claims and has vowed to “conquer space” and “plant the [North Korean] flag on the moon”.
