Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that, based on the current evidence, there is no tsunami threat to nearby islands.

The quake struck at a depth of 67.8km at 11.24am local time, 115km east of Kimbe, Papua New Guinea.

The epicentre of Saturday’s quake was located 180km south-west of Rabaul on New Britain island, 900km north-east of the Papuan capital of Port Moresby.

The Centre said: “An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 occurred in the New Britain region, Papua New Guinea at 11.24 UTC on Saturday March 24.

“Based on all available data thee is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.”

The centre later revised the magnitude down to 6.3.

At least 55 people died in a separate earthquake in Papua New Guinea earlier this month, although authorities fear the toll could exceed 100.
