Two people have been seriously injured in an explosion in Austin, Texas.

Police and paramedics responded to an explosion at around 8.32pm local time on Sunday in a residential area of southwest Austin.

Two male victims in their 20s were transported to South Austin Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

Residents in the area of the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive were advised to remain inside their homes until police gave the all clear, with officials saying that would likely not be until daybreak on Monday.

The street is a quiet tree-lined cul-de-sac surrounded by single-family homes, some with backyard pools.

A large police response was seen in the area, including FBI and AFT agents wearing raid jackets as well as bomb-sniffing K9 units.

About two hours after the explosion, interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley appeared at a media staging area flanked by federal agents and gave a statement.

‘What we have right now is a scene where it is obvious an explosion has taken place,’ the chief told the assembled press.

‘Given the darkness, we have not really had an opportunity to look at this blast site to determine what has happened. But it is obvious there’s been an explosion, it’s obvious it’s caused significant injuries to two people,’ Manley continued.

The chief advised everyone within a half mile of the explosion scene to remain inside their homes until police secured the area and issued an all-clear.

Manley that would not be until morning on Monday, and advised that police would have further updates at that time.

Initial reports of two explosions appeared to be a mix-up resulting from multiple calls to 911. Officials confirmed that there had been only one explosion on Sunday.
