A teenage boy has been killed and a woman is fighting for her life after a package exploded in the kitchen of a Texas home just 10 days after a similar blast occurred 11 miles away.

Police were called to the home in Austin at 6.45am on Monday following reports of the explosion.

The 17-year-old boy was found dead in the home and a woman aged in her 40s was rushed to hospital with severe injuries.

No one else was injured in the blast.

The blast occurred at the family home on the 4800 block of Oldfort Hill Drive.

Police said the package was found on the doorstep early Monday and one of the family members brought it inside.

It detonated in the kitchen after it was opened.

Police said early indications suggest the package was placed on the doorstep and not delivered through a mail service.

The bomb squad, FBI and the United States Postal Service are currently at the scene assisting the Austin Police Department with the homicide investigation.

It is the second deadly package explosion in Austin this month and police believe the two blasts may be related.
