North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un used his New Year’s address to announce his deadly nuclear arsenal is ready to strike Donald Trump and the United States.
But a series of the “largest ever” sanctions on Kim Jong-un’s regime imposed by the US aims to cause economic disruption for the hermit nation.
Donald Trump warned on Friday that if North Korea does not respond sensibly to America’s tough new sanctions then the US will be forced to implement “phase two”.
Mr Trump did not specify what “phase two” meant but his response implied a forceful comeback which goes beyond the point of economic sanctions.
Former US ambassador John Bolton said there is “not enough time” for the sanctions to fully impact North Korea.
He warned Kim Jong-un is only “months away” from developing nuclear weapons capable of striking the USA.
Mr Bolton told Fox News: “I’m in favour of all new sanctions on North Korea. But I think we are past the point where this kind of targeted naming of individuals companies and ships is going to have any impact.”
He added: “For 15 years we have been incrementally notching up on North Korea. They are within months, according to CIA Director Pompeo, of having deliverable nuclear weapons.
