Donald Trump’s forces are bearing down on the hermit kingdom amid fears Pyongyang could exploit his new cosy friendship with South Korea to press on with his quest for nuclear ICBMs.

War fears have loomed over the region since last year as the North refused to abandon its missile programme and threatened to the attack the US.

Vice president Mike Pence and Donald’s daughter Ivanka are just two of the high profile Washington dignitaries visiting Pyeongchang for what has been dubbed the Peace Olympics.

And standing behind them is the massive US military presence in the Pacific which has swelled in the run-up to the 2018 games.

Two massive aircraft carriers, 50 warships and submarines, nuclear armed bombers, the world’s best fighter planes, and nearly 100,000 soldiers lie in wait around North Korea.

USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan have moved into position ahead of the Winter Olympics.

Each of them weighs 100,000 tons and carries on board 90 warplanes and helicopters, along with nearly 14,000 sailors, marines and airmen between them.

Alongside them sails their carrier strike groups of missile-armed destroyers and stealthy submarines ready for action.

And backing them up is the amphibious assault vessel USS Wasp, which carries another 2,000 marines along with a wing of state-of-the-art F-35B fighter jets.

North Korea has for the past few years been curbed by the US aircraft carriers, which periodically sail into the region to calm Kim down.
