AMERICA is holding its breath fearing the BIG ONE after the north-west continued to be hit by multiple earthquakes today after a massive 7.9 magnitude quake sparked major tsunami warnings across the state on Thursday.

Quakes were hitting both Alsaka and mainland USA hourly and they were seemingly mirrored in Japan and the Philippines.

The zones are all on the terrifying Ring of Fire – a system of highly active tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust which are continually crashing into each other sparking the quakes.

Currently the movement is slight and the earthquakes manageable – but the plates are so massive that even a slight increase in intensity will spark earthquakes capable of levelling cities.

The USA’s Rocky Mountains, which run down the west coast, were formed by this massive tectonic activity.

Seismologists across the globe were monitoring the movement minute by minute – fearing the next one could be the quake which takes out California.

In recent hours the earthquakes have included:

A 4.3 magnitude hit Alaska, 283km of Kodiak in the early hours of Sunday morning at 12.38am.

A 2.5 magnitude quake, 94km of Coldfeet in Alaska at 1.01am.

Just a few hours later Kodiak in Alaska was struck by a 4.1 magnitude quake at 3.06am and again at 3.48am in the south east of Kodiak with the largest 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

At 6.22am, a 4.5 magnitude shock hit Kodiak in Alaska, and then again at 7am with a 3.3 magnitude quake.

The latest quake occurred in Kodiak Station, Alaska, measuring 2.9 magnitude.

A 4.2 magnitude quake also occurred in the Gulf of Alaska just before 7am this morning and was followed multiple quakes of around 3 to 3.5 magnitude at least once an hour.
