A powerful earthquake has struck the coast of Indonesia forcing thousands to evacuate.

The Indonesian island of Java was hit by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday.

The country’s capital Jakarta was also affected by the earthquake but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, the 6.4 magnitude quake was centered offshore western Java at a depth of about 43 kilometers.

According to Indonesia’s Department of Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics, there is no tsunami warning.

Buildings in the capital swayed for 10 to 20 seconds and people have taken to social media describing the earthquake as terrifying.

‘This is the second time I felt an earthquake in Jakarta, so shocking, so scary, so traumatic,’ one person wrote.

‘Was at the airport in Jakarta when we felt the 6.1 earthquake 100 miles away. That’s a captivating “welcome to Indonesia!” another person shared.

‘Just experienced my first earthquake in Jakarta and needed to run from the 25th floor,’ someone else wrote.

Indonesia is located at the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
