US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was speaking at a 20-nation meeting in Vancouver today, where he encouraged countries to continue to heap pressure on North Korea to ensure Kim Jong-un will not sidestep sanctions.

The meeting, made to countries that backed the South in the 1950-53 Korean War, was called after North Korea tested its biggest every intercontinental ballistic missile in late November.

Mr Tillerson claimed there is the very real chance a passenger plane could be hit by a missile, and encouraged nations not to be fooled by North Korea’s charm offensive with the South.

He said the potential for a North Korean missile, or parts of it, to affect a civilian aircraft is real.

North and South Korea held formal talks for the first time in two years this month and Pyongyang said it would send athletes to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.

There have also been discussions about the two nations fielding a joint women’s ice hockey team.

Despite the recent dialogue, Kim Jong-un has refused to back down on developing nuclear weapons in the face of increasingly severe UN sanctions.

The US Secretary of State said all countries need to work together to ensure sanctions are working, such as intercepting ships that aim to skirt them.

China and Russia have both slammed the meeting in Vancouver as “Cold War” thinking.

Mr Tillerson said: “We must increase the cost of the regime’s behaviour to the point that North Korea must come to the table for credible negotiations.”

Japan’s Foreign Minister Taro Kono agreed with Mr Tillerson that the world should not be fooled by North Korea opening a dialogue with its neighbour.

He said: ‘It is not the time to ease pressure, or to reward North Korea.
