Official figures released by Public Health England (PHE) show more than 1,400 people were admitted to hospital with flu in the first week of January 2018 – a staggering spike of around 50%.

Flu related deaths rocketed by 77% in England during the same period, between the last week of December and January 7, 2018, the figures show.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland and Scotland reported cases of flu symptoms increased by a whopping 130% during the same time frame.

Analysis of these statistics suggests the flu crisis engulfing Britain could morph into a epidemic, with the death toll creeping up into the hundreds within weeks.

The shock figures come amid a nationwide outbreak of sinister influenza A and B strains, including the potent “Aussie flu” and highly contagious “Japanese flu”.

The flu outbreak has claimed the lives of 85 people in England and eight in Scotland, according to PHE figures.

Among the victims was tragic Bethany Walker, an 18-year-old student who was struck down with the illness at her home in Applecross, Scotland.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, John Oxford, professor of virology at the University of London, said the flu season is expected to “get worse” in the coming weeks.

“I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet,” he said.

“The flu season is only just beginning; it’s only January, so I expected things to get worse.”
