North Korea has been warned to stop its nuclear programme but has ignored threats and sanctions placed on the state.

President Donald Trump has attempted to increase pressure on Kim Jong-un, but as threats between the countries continue fears over World War 3 have been heightened.

The North Korean regime has now agreed to begin talks with South Korea in ground-breaking high-level communications ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Michael Waltz, a retired Army Green Beret commander has warned that the dictator could be using the talks to buy more time for its nuclear weapons development.

He told Fox News: “This is a play right out of the North Korean regime’s playbook. They wait until the pressure is really dialled up.

“They get away with as much as they can in terms of advancing their nuclear programme and then once it gets too harsh, then they open the door again to talks and to dialogue and to dial it back down again so that they buy more time.

“We saw it with the Six-party talks under the Bush administration. We saw it with the Clinton administration in the 1990’s peace accord.

“I am concerned and I am very sceptical. That being said it is the right policy to kind of take a pause for the Olympics, it is the Olympics after all.
