The federal government wastes or ineffectively uses billions of taxpayer dollars every year. In late November, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) released the annual waste report: “Federal Fumbles: 100 Ways the Government Dropped the Ball.”

The report provides examples of waste and mismanagement that took place over eleven months, including newly documented past waste and ongoing wasteful practices.

The total wasted dollars dug up for the report: $473 billion. Lankford wrote in the introductory remarks in the report:

Included in ‘Federal Fumbles’ is just a sampling of instances where federal agencies or departments have wasted or inefficiently used billions of your dollars. The program and grant funding discussed in this book has already been allocated or spent and cannot be recovered. But highlighting it here provides lessons for agencies and hopefully encourages Congress to utilize its oversight and legislative authority to prevent future waste and misuse of federal tax dollars.

Lankford said the report should be utilized by members of Congress to curtail the waste and make sure federal agencies “are doing the right thing, the right way.”

“Americans rightly expect great things from their leaders in Washington,” Lankford said. “I offer this book as a guide for elected officials of both parties to identify areas of improvement so we may come together to do the work our constituents expect and our country deserves.”

“There are certain things we wanted to be able to put into perspective with this,” Lankford said at the time the report was released. “This is the to-do list for next year.”

The report is based on government oversight agencies, including inspectors general for each federal agency and the Government Office of Accountability (GOA).

How about designating funds for better ROI projects like:

    1. Give every honorably discharged American veteran 20 acres and an American made pickup. Land that cannot be sold unless the veteran dies.

    2. Free tuition to residents at state colleges.

    3. Tax free $1 million BBoomer Social security severance to those currently working or not, born before 1963, who agree to waive all rights to further social security; agree not to hire out as an employee; carry and pay for individual healthcare insurance and life insurance for themselves.

    4. Offer high school students employment benefactors who will mentor, and pay college tuition and subsistence stipend with the agreement that the student work for that benefactor after college graduation at a one year market rate job/position for every 2 years of financed mentoring/support.

Here are some more ideas for dealing with government waste. There has to be personal and financial accounting. Thus, for every finding of unrecoverable waste or fraud, the following takes place:

    1. The amount of waste comes out of next year’s budget.
    2. Next year’s budget cannot exceed this year’s budget BEFORE the waste is deducted.
    3. The head of the responsible cost center is fired and barred from all future government service. (Ideally this should start with the *agency head* and work its way downwards until it includes the responsible cost center.)
    4. If waste occurs a second time, the responsible cost center is shut down and any unspent monies are subtracted from next year’s appropriation for that agency.
