Swarthmore College will offer 2018 courses entitled “Queering the Bible” and “Queering God,” according to a Friday report.
“Queering the Bible” “destabilizes long-held assumptions about what the bible–and religion–says about gender and sexuality,” reported The College Fix.
Gwynn Kessler, the Swarthmore religion professor teaching the course, will apparently introduce “students to the complexity of constructions of sex, gender, and identity in one of the most influential literary works produced in ancient times.”
Kessler studies “rabbinic constructions of gender and identity,” examining issues with “postmodern, feminist, and queer theoretical approaches.”
Swarthmore’s religion department will also offer “Queering God: Feminist and Queer Theology.”
“If we can point out places in traditional writings where God is nurturing, forgiving, and loving, does that mean that God is feminine, or female?” asks this latter course description.
