The Russian President claims America has pushed the hermit kingdom into violating nuclear agreements.
He said that all sides in the crisis need to calm down as tensions escalate on the Korean peninsula.
The US, Japan and South Korea have stepped up military drills on Kim Jong-un’s doorstep after the regime’s latest missile test.
Trump has previously threatened to “totally destroy” the secretive state.
But Putin warned the consequences of a missile strike would be devastating.
The Moscow strongman made the remarks at an annual news conference.
He said: “We believe the two sides should now stop aggravating the situation.”
Putin added that Russia does not accept Pyongyang’s nuclear status, as the regime strives for ICBMs.
