Putin is already taking drastic steps to secure the frozen waters by beefing up his army and navy following breakthrough discoveries that up to 26% of Earth’s untapped oil lies beneath the murky depths.

Already a huge super-sub that rivals US models has been built that can fire a barrage of devastating intercontinental missiles at targets thousands of miles away.

The strongman has also reopened about 50 former Soviet Arctic military bases and has deployed thousands of troops in a bid to control the region.

His plans are all part of “Project Iceberg”, which built the biggest-ever nuclear submarine to act as a hub for smaller vessels.

Russia expert Stephen Blank at the American Foreign Policy Council said Putin’s pet project could develop “secret deployments” to protect its holdings.

He added: “The UN Commission gave Russia the right to extensive holdings in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the Western Pacific, in 2013.

“Moscow promptly converted it to an exclusive naval bastion and preserve for its energy companies.

“It would not surprise me if they have also had a secret deep-water deployment of some sort for some time.”

So far Putin has pumped billions of rubles into the region and has persuaded parliament to back his Arctic ambitions.

Russian MP Igor Chernyshenko said Vlad will flash more cash in a bid to dominate control of any oil found under the ice sheets.
