The last time the island’s alarms sounded was the Japanese airforce attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which left 2,403 Americans dead.

The death toll from a Kim Jong-un ordered nuclear missile attack is likely to be massively higher.

Kim Jong-un has aimed his twisted threats at the US islands on many previous occasions but the rhetoric is being ramped-up.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency administrator Vern Miyagi said: “Hawaii is a likely target because we’re closer to North Korea than most of the continental United States…

“As we track the news and see tests, both missile launches and nuclear tests, it’s the elephant in the room.

“We can’t ignore it. The people of Hawaii need to know what Hawaii is doing in preparation for this.”

The sirens were originally installed following the attack on Pearl Harbour, which brought the US into the Second World War, to warn of an impending Japanese attack.

Veteran Ted Tsukiyama said: “I remember hearing the sirens going off. The radio would give us a warning: ‘This is only a test, don’t get alarmed.’”
