THE threat of nuclear weapons being used is “more probable” due to the unpredictability of North Korea, the former US chairman of the joint chief of staff has warned.

Retired Admiral Mike Mullen said the United States’ increasingly volatile relationship with the hermit nation and its unpredictability increased the likelihood dictator Kim Jong-un would use nuclear weapons.

Mr Mullen told ABC’s This Week on Sunday: “I think it’s more probable than it used to be, and it scares me to death quite frankly.

“They’re the most dangerous weapons in the world. And, certainly if we have someone in North Korea that has a lethal legacy, is very, very unpredictable and sees this as a way to solidify his future, that he could well not just obtain them, but potentially use them.”

The prospect of nuclear conflict has risen in recent months as both Kim and US President Donald Trump have traded threats and insults as tensions have risen as North Korea has forged ahead with its missile launches and development of nuclear weapons.

The comments come after a US security expert warned that North Korea’s nuclear threat will not go away anytime soon.

Buck Sexton, a former intelligence officer with the Central Intelligence Agency, said recent sanctions imposed on North Korea would not stop them from attempting to develop its nuclear arsenal.

He told Fox Business: “The big problem is that economic pressure alone is not enough to bring the Kim regime in line with international norms.”

Mr Sexton added that the current UN sanctions would not work in stopping the dictator.

He said: “We are trying to leverage China, that alone won’t be enough.

“Nuclear weapons are a central goal, not just to have them, but to have them so they can fire them over to us, over the Kim dynasty.

“They only really exist for two reasons, the Kim dynasty only really exists for two reasons, Kim and his predecessors. One to deal with outside invasion, they say that the US is always trying to come in and destroy them. And to reunify the Korean peninsula.
