US Air Force commanders have deployed a E-8C STARS spy-plane over the Korean Peninsula.

It took off from its base in Okinawa, Japan, earlier this afternoon and has been detected circling near North Korea.

War fears have loomed between Kim and the US as the two sides engaged in a fiery war of words.

However, more than 70 days of silence have fallen over the region as North Korea fail to make good on threats to fire another missile.

But with one of the US’s top surveillance craft overheads – what do the Pentagon know?

E-8C is one of the most advanced radar planes in the US Air Force – being designed for “battle management”.

Its full name STARS means “Surveillance Target Attack Radar System”.

Its radars are designed to pick-up troop and vehicle movements and can track more than 600 targets at once.

Up to 22 crewmen can be onboard the 449mph aircraft, with four members of the flight crew and 18 surveillance specialists.

And the officers onboard can monitor nearly 20,000 square miles simultaneously.

US spooks may have deployed the plane to investigate any suspicious movements of North Korean military equipment as Kim’s men begin their winter war games.

South requested the planes be deployed back in 2010 amid escalating tensions with the North.

Massive amounts of US military weapons and equipment are present in the Pacific amid growing tensions with Kim.
