The Knyaz Vladimir, meaning ‘Vladimir the Great’ is capable of launching 20 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), which can devastate cities up to 5,778 miles away.

By comparison the US’s own super sub is armed with 24 ICMBs, but the missile range is more than a 1,00 miles shorter.

The Borei II-class sub was unveiled in a ceremony in northern Russia on November 17, attended by the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Korolyov, and a host of top-ranking diplomats.

The submarine was laid down in July 2012 and is expected to be delivered to the Russian Navy next year.

Russia plans to build a total of eight super subs by 2025 as it boosts its naval firepower amid growing international tensions.

The news comes after Putin called on major Russian businesses to be ready to help the military as he praised Moscow’s economy.

He said: “The ability of our economy to increase military production and services at a given time is one of the most important aspects of military security.

“To this end, all strategic, and simply large-scale enterprise should be ready, regardless of ownership.”

On Tuesday, Mr Putin had demanded Russia speeds up its military technology developments to boost competition with the West.

He said: “Our army and navy need to have the very best equipment — better than foreign equivalents.
