NORTH Korea could be preparing for a devastating attack after satellite imagery revealed worrying signs of activity at one of the hermit state’s testing sites.

North Korea has spent the past few months threatening to destroy America, Japan and South Korea, and new photos indicate an acceleration of military testing activity.

Photos taken from mid-September to late-October show a hive of activity at the Magunpo Rocket Engine Test Facility – although a test event cannot be confirmed from images alone.

38 North, a Washington-based North Korea watchdog, analysed the images, which could prove a key insight into despot Kim Jong-un’s secretive military plans.

While the dictator’s missile tests attract world attention and are met with a volley of condemnations and sanctions from leaders across the globe, the more low-scale rocket tests are harder to detect.

38 North said activity at Magunpo was hard to conclusively attribute to a full-scale rocket test – but warned it could not be ruled out.

Photos taken on October 19 and 24 show an “excavated area” emerge before being filled in, a possible indication of a test.

They said: “The excavated area appears to have been filled and graded flat by October 24. The most likely reasons for the removal of the wall and associated construction activity are to either modify the stand to accommodate larger engines or to repair damage from a recent test.”

There are other signs which could be attributed a test fire: dark patches on facility roofs, disappearing walls and piles of dirt or debris.

More obvious signs of a test, such as burned or damaged vegetation in the surrounding area, however, are not present in any photos.

This does not mean a test was not carried out, 38 North said, instead it could simply mean Kim’s engineers are getting better at disguising damage.

38 North said: “Colour infrared imagery shows no significant indications of vegetation adjacent to the test stand being burnt from exhaust.
