THE head of the Russian Orthodox Church and a close adviser to Vladimir Putin has made a terrifying prophecy – that the end of the world is near.

Church leader Patriarch Kirill has warned the apocalypse is “already visible to the naked eye” and only humanity can come together and save it.

Kirill, who sparked fury in 2013 by saying recognising same-sex marriage was a sign of the apocalypse, read out the warning to churchgoers in Moscow.

Speaking at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in the Russian capital, the 71-year-old said: “Today is not the time to rock the boat of human passions.

“That’s why the church, art, culture, our writers, scientists – all those people who love the Motherland – should come together because we are entering a critical period in human civilisation.”

He said the only hope was that societies could work together to avoid “the abyss of the end of history”.

The church leader did not specify which threats had caused his doom-laden prophecy.

But his remarks come at a time when North Korea and the US sit on the knife edge of a new world war, along with Iran and Saudi Arabia.

It also comes as Russian forces are suspected of interfering in the democratic processes of foreign nations and terror attacks are frequently making headlines.

Patriarch Kirill became Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2009.

Under him the Church has had close ties with the Russian state under Putin.
