President Trump had a crunch meeting with Putin on the sidelines of an economic summit in Vietnam during his marathon 12-day tour of Asia.

During the face-off, the powerful world leaders are said to have discussed the civil war in Syria and the crisis engulfing North Korea, among other issues.

Now the pair are to hold phone talks as part of a diplomatic push to resolve those problems.

The crisis talks will take place after Putin was paid a surprise visit by Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday.

Hosting Assad at his Black Sea residence in Sochi, Putin said he would follow up the meeting with a telephone call to Trump, according to the Kremlin.

Reltions between Moscow and Washington have been tense in recent months after Russia was accused of medling in the 2016 election.

But Trump, who has been accused of “colluding” with the Kremlin during the campaign, has sought to strike a more conciliatory tone when dealing with Russia.

On the international stage, Trump has placed denuclearising North Korea and ending the Syria war at the top of his list of priorities.

Putin has also taken a central in efforts to end the five-year civil conflict in Syria, with his military helping Assad crush opponents, incluidng rebel groups and ISIS.

“The most important question, of course, is what will happen after the defeat of the terrorists in terms of a peaceful political settlement,” told Assad during their meeting on Monday.

Assad was called to Russia to get him to agree to potential peace, the Krelmin said.
